Designer Profile: Nathan Paul

In 2010 Nathan Paul Lodge launched the ‘Journeys Collection’ from his label titled Nathan Paul Swimwear at Rosemount Australian Fashion Week, and since then the brand has becoming increasingly popular.

Nathan took some time out to chat to Beauty and Lace about the label and what is in store for the future…

How did you get started as a designer?

It become a natural transition for me on personal level. I enjoyed having input on the design aspect when I was involved with other brands so when opportunity arose to create my line, I was eager to design.

Why did you choose to focus on swimwear?

Swimwear is interesting as you are not type cast to fit a certain mould. Its a genre that is universal and has a category of its own. I enjoy the beach as much and creating a product that is suitable for it is a real passion.

Where do you get your inspirations for your designs?

Design inspiration can come from many forms. It can be something so simple that you see on the ground- to experiencing something out of your comfort zone. My design inspiration always comes when you least expect it…

Where do you get your inspirations for your designs?

Animal prints are always popular right?

How did you make the decision to use a male, Andre Pejic to model for you?

Andrej was a fantastic edition to our team last year and a really fun campaign to make. It was his ability to portray the collection in two aspects. Moving on this year we are really excited to work with Sarah Jordan and Bart Rollins. They are the stars of our current campaign and our first Fashion Film entitled ‘Getaway”.

Who are your pieces designed for?

Our clientele is very fashion forward and hip. We have a mixture of young and old whom wear our product, I think very much the OBG demographic.

What has been your proudest moment so far?

I have had several proud moment but as my label is still young, I think my proudest moment is still yet to come.

What are you currently working on?

Knots and bows. They’re often forgotten!

If you could have one achievement in life what would it be?

If I could have one achievement in life it would to keep the clientele happy. If I can do that then all ambitions are ceased.

You have recently moved to Sydney, what has this change been like for you?

A change of city is always refreshing and important for designers. Sydney is such a broad and vibrant city. Running along the beach every morning is truly the most blessed and humble way to start the day but we are now currently based out of LA and embracing every aspect of it!

What’s next for Nathan Paul?

Basing ourselves out of Los Angles as we are very determined on our expansion policy. We hope to evolve brand and design concepts to cater to a broader consumer.
