Tell us about your brand, Jessica Martino…
The Jessica Martino brand is a collection of easy to wear, classic cut wardrobe essentials. My main objective is to enable women to feel comfortable in their own skin whilst wearing Jessica Martino.
How did you get started?
I studied at Swan TAFE in Perth and completed my diploma in textiles and footwear. When I left TAFE I went straight into building up my own label.
You were raised in WA, what can you tell us about fashion in Perth?
Perth girls are definitely laid back in their style. We do tend to follow trends that come here from overseas but Perth girls aren’t afraid to put their own spin on things. So there are a lot of different looks and styles around. It’s a mixed bag depending on where you go.
Who would wear Jessica Martino?
Women who are confident, chic and love easy, inviting and beautiful clothing. Really if I had to think of the ultimate Jessica Martino woman who embodied the essence of the brand it would be a hybrid of Julia Restoin- Roitfeld and Christine Centenera.
Dressmaking runs in your family, who has inspired you the most?
My mum has been the biggest inspiration in all aspects of my life especially in my career.
How do you select your fabrics?
When choosing my fabrics I look towards the international fashion stage to see what’s relevant at the time. At the end of the day, I choose what appeals to me; I look at the texture, what feels good on the skin and practicality according to the season and our climate.
Do you have any predictions for Autumn / Winter trends?
Fur and leather which are always a winter given. Rich colours, soft textures, comfort clothing which still has that luxurious and glamorous look.
What would you say to young women who want a career in fashion?
Work hard at it and keep persevering. It’s not a 9 to 5 job it’s your life so if you’re not willing to put in the hard yards it probably isn’t the career for you. At the end of the day if you’re doing what you love it’s never really a job. Like they say “If you love what you do, you’ll never have to work a day in your life.”
Who are your favourite Australian designers right now?
At the moment I am loving Camilla and Marc and Ellery. I’ve always been a lover of Australian fashion. I think our designers have something really special and unique about them.
What is your favourite piece from the Jessica Martino collection?
My Tex mex dress. This dress is the epitome of my brand. Simple. Sexy. Classic.
What are you currently working on?
Currently I’m working on Spring/Summer 2012-13. I’m moving towards a lot of shift style dresses for next season.
Where can we buy your pieces?
What does being a woman mean to you?
Being a woman to me means having power and strength. All the women in my life that I grew up around were all very independent, strong providers and that’s what I look to when I think of what a woman is and what she is capable of.
