Ben Albrecht Jewellery is the brain-child and passion of Melbourne jeweler Ben Albrecht, he is the youngest member of Melbourne’s iconic jewellery institution Kozminsky and now he’s branched out on his own. We were able to find out about his unique business.
Hi Ben, welcome to Beauty and Lace.
What would you be doing if you weren’t a jeweler?
Most likely a Formula 1 driver for Ferrari or a Hollywood movie star. I love food so there could have been a career as a chef.
Can you tell us a little about the beginning of your career in jewellery?
I have grown up with jewellery all my life…..and have been surrounded by beautiful pieces from a very young age. My late Father immigrated from Germany to Australia in the late 1950’s and was a highly respected gold and silversmith, this in essence forged my career in the industry
Where did the idea for Ben Albrecht Jewelley come from?
I began Ben Albrecht Jewellery out of a desire to provide a bespoke private service to my clients. I built the business with the difference in going to clients and working in with their schedules.
Can you tell us a little about the unique business model?
The model is private/internet based. The clients deal with me directly and never have to leave their homes. I find buyers of high quality pieces like their privacy, and don’t always want to be seen purchasing pieces in stores.
What sets you apart from other jewellers?
Not only do I design and ensure that clients receive the best pieces for what they are paying for, I also act as an agent between buyers and sellers where the selling/buying process is completely transparent for the two parties. And my years in the jewellery industry ensure that people can be assured of the highest quality and know where their pieces are coming from.
Who is the target audience for your business?
I would like to say all ages! I have newly engaged couples in their twenties and serious collectors from their 40’s onwards. In general they are clients who really want outstanding one of a kind pieces.
Where is the most inspiring place your work has taken you?
If there was one place…which I will return to it would be Istanbul, Turkey. Everything from textiles to carpets, and the immense variations in architecture is inspiring.
What inspires your designs?
“Jewellery that transcends time”. My dream is that a client can look at a ring that I’ve designed in twenty years time and still get excited about what they are wearing…..timeless for me is a key aspect in everything I do.
‘Ben Albrecht Jewellery puts the customer in the centre of the retail process, the customer does not come to Ben, Ben goes to the customer.’ – can you explain this statement to us?
My clients are usually referred to me. The majority of all my clients see me at their workplace or home. People are extremely busy and time poor…….I’ve fixed the problem by going to them and clients enjoy being in their own homes where they are more relaxed and don’t in any way feel pressured. I frown on pressure selling and always advise clients to buy from whoever makes them happiest.
Can you tell us a little about what we might expect to pay for one of your pieces? What’s a basic starting price?
It really depends on the piece, is it handmade or is it cast? What gemstones are involved? I have seen a lot of jewellery that has been sold as something which it isn’t! Which means buyers have paid far too much for something that is not what they thought they have bought. I have sold pieces from $500.00 to $200,000.00. It all depends what you want.
Where do you want to take your business over the next 5 years?
I would love to say internationally….but my brand is me! And people like dealing with me, so I guess it will be here in Melbourne with more clients who enjoy my service.
